I enjoyed this book. Its intricate plot crosses over between genres - the result is romantic suspense with the undertones of an intriguing crime thriller. Somehow the author managed to weave together the stories of four very different characters, each carrying their own emotional burdens and/or memories from the past. Both Sunil and Alisha are strong and likeable characters - they live in the modern world, yet retain respect for their cultural heritage and traditions. Strangers when they first arrive at the Blue House, the relationships between Sunil, Duke, Alisha and the mystery woman are complicated and sort themselves out as the secrets are divulged and the mystery is resolved. This is the third book I've read by Sunanda Chatterjee and I'm wondering when she will write her next one, can't wait for it. This is an intricate plot with complicated but endearing characters - I really enjoyed it! Great read for a rainy winter afternoon.
This is a great mystery that takes place in India. The author does a great job depicting her three main characters, how their lives intertwine and the suspense and drama that results. Since the story takes place it India, it portrays many of the cultural expectations of women and how those women choose to deal with that, or not.
Romance, a drug king-pin, cops and mystery. Can't beat it.
This book is like a snapshot of real life, with all the interactions between the characters pushing forward the action, intrigue, suspense and romance. This book's got it all. I thought the characters were well developed with quite a mix, damaged soldiers, ex-cops, drug barons,. It raises issues of betrayal, arranged marriage, corruption. This book would make a great movie, I certainly hope someone picks up the rights. Well done to the Author S. Chatterjee
Having recently read and enjoyed a couple of short stories by Sunanda Chatterjee in the Holiday Heartwarmers anthology, I was very much looking forward to The Blue House in Bishop and was not disappointed. This story gripped me from the very beginning, with very likeable characters, each very different but who gelled so well together. It had just the right mixture of romance, suspense with a touch of humour. Congrats to the author for a very enjoyable read )
The Blue House on Bishop tells the story of three troubled individuals brought together through life circumstances. All professional people, all seeking love and a chance to succeed at it. In a society where women as regarded as ornamental rather than equal partners, Alisha has to prove herself over and over again, to her parents and then to the men, she, unfortunately enters into relationships with. There are several sub-plots to this story, with a lot of suspense, fighting, killings and double dealings, keeping the reader rapidly turning the pages.
I like the depiction of Indian culture with its many social issues, even the one that's taboo is hinted at, although not mentioned in great detail. I was most surprised by the ending, not what I was expecting at all, but that's the beauty of the book. Great read!
Alisha Raj is a cop who had lost her faith in the system. She resigns and falls into the nitty gritty of family life, with her mother pressurizing her to marry. As with many young girls in India, the expectations to marry mounts up after a certain age. So when her mother finds a right match for her, she couldn't refuse and decides to meet the guy.
She is pleasantly surprised to find that Dr. Sunil Samant has no inclination to marry her either but is also agreeing under duress, due to his mother's illness. But fate binds them in a friendship and they both decide to pretend to accept their mom's desires and give this a try. Alisha goes to the USA to live with Sunil and meets his 'broken friend', Duke Wilcox. And that is a fatal attraction.
But The Blue House in Bishop is not a simple love story. It has layers upon layers upon layers of mysteries. Two federal agents, one woman with red hair and a small girl child who is not what she seems. makes this novel a very interesting read.
I love this new style of writing by Sunanda Chatterjee. I have read her other books and was pleasantly surprised with her bold style of writing in this one. By bold, I don't only mean the sensual scenes that this book has but the character of Alisha. She is spunky, breaking our traditional taboos and yet her softer side is not eclipsed. Sunil and Duke provide the perfect combination of friendship and the dark brooding young guy.
The red haired lady is now another story. And also here lies my only peeve. I would have rather had Alisha open the layers rather than it being told all at once. But yes I do agree that writing a romance with mystery, balancing between both the genres is a precarious walk. One tends to favor one side more than the other. In that way, I must praise Ms. Chatterjee's craftsmanship. Except for the revelation scene, the whole story is gripping. Gripping. I couldn't put it down even if I wanted to. After a long time, I can say, I found this book 'unputdownable.'
After reading the description of this book, I was intrigued on many levels while wondering how an author was going to pull so many varying elements and subplots together in a manner that would make sense. There was a hint at romance, there was the hint of thriller, and there was a hint of mystery, and all in equal doses. In the beginning of the story there were so many loose ends being dangled before the reader it was a challenge keeping them separate. But with an ease and finesse that few writers possess, Chatterjee slowly wove the threads together. The characters are well developed and believable and the plot continues to pick up speed right to the very surprising climax at the end. Clean editing and well structured. A great story that leaves you wishing there was more.
